The Three Persons: A Brief Lesson in English Grammar

This blog post may take a little explaining. Okay, so the three persons are grammatical categories to divide nouns, verbs, and pronouns into. 1st Person(I, we) 2nd Person(you), and 3rd Person(he,she,it,they). As a grammar nerd and someone who has very random ideas, I decided to try a blog post on the subject. You’ll have to bear with me on this, I’ll try not to let it drag too much:

1st Person- I find this to be a very personal person(yes, pun intended). I noticed it’s a current trend in YA fiction(Hunger Games, Divergent, Between the Lines, The Fault in Our Stars, to name a few). Sorry, I find a way to work books/movies into nearly all my blog posts. Oh, and by the way, I haven’t read all of the books I just mentioned, nor would I probably recommmend any of them, I just wanted to point out their person. 🙂 I have heard that this is the wrong person to use in persuasive writing, a tip I tend to agree with but don’t always follow.  Alright, let’s move on…

2nd Person-

You will have noticed that the above paragraph is written in the first person. You may also have guessed that this entire paragraph is written in the second person. If you have ever read a Choose Your Own Adventure story, you will probably remember the peculiar fact that you were reading one of the only fictional series to use the second person. You are getting tired of this person…

3rd Person-

Phew, what a relief to fall back into my most comfortable tense. Probably the most common of the three, it may also be a personal favorite of mine. Understandably, most books are written in the third person. Now, the only type of book not covered yet is the kind with multiple persons, for example, Enchantress from the Stars. Two thirds are written in the typical third person, but the rest is written in first person.

Well, I guess that’s it, thanks for reading!
